From being just a reconnaissance wing in the 1940s, F 21 has come a long way. It has now evolved into an Air Base that provides a solid platform to a range of Gripen multi-role missions.

The most important tasks for the two squadrons at F 21 today are Quick Reaction Alert and Combat Readiness Training. The Air Base is also involved in the Cross Border Training program with the Finnish and Norwegian air forces earlier this year and has played an instrumental role in the recently held multinational Arctic Challenge Exercise (ACE 15) which involved 3600 personal and 115 aircraft.

When it comes to fighter development, at Saab we have our own philosophy. Using technology and a different way of thinking, we have redefined what a fighter aircraft can be.

​ACE 15, the two weeks long exercise in which pilots from Sweden, Finland and Norway are participating, will be over tomorrow. 

About 115 aircraft, including tanker planes and support planes are a part of the exercise. More than 3600 people from nine countries are working together and up to 90 aircraft have been in the air at the same time during some missions. It is one of the largest air exercises in the world this year. Here are a few snapshots from the ACE15.

A fly past of 10 Czech, Hungarian and Swedish Gripen over the Czech Air Force’s 21st Tactical Air Base at Čáslav marked the celebration of 10 years of the fighter in service in the Czech Republic, reports Afbcaslav.cz.

Amongst those present at the ceremony were Czech Defence Minister Martin Stropnický, Air Force Commander Brigadier General Libor Štefánik and representatives from the air forces of Sweden, Hungary and Croatia.

The Czech Defence Minister, in his speech, said that Gripen is a reliable aircraft and the Czech Air Force pilots are very satisfied with it, adding that they have logged in 20,000 flight hours during the last 10 years. The Minister also announced that NATO has requested for the deployment of the Czech Gripen in Iceland this summer.

General Libor Štefánik, who also addressed the audience, thanked all the people associated with the program, especially the Swedish team for their training of specialists and support during the last ten years.

"The introduction of Gripen has significantly changed our approach to the tasks of the Air Force. Gripen is not a just modern aircraft with different combat capabilities, but an important impetus for new missions and a huge motivation for all who are involved in the project," said General Štefánik.​

​Three first prize winners of a contest arranged by Saab and AVIA Satcom at Thailand’s Children´s Day 2015 got an opportunity to fly the Gripen simulator.

This was the second year in a row in which Saab and AVIA Satcom organized a contest exclusively for children with the top prize being a flight in Gripen simulator.

“We hope to make this a yearly tradition,” says Anna Lindh, Head of Communications, Saab Asia Pacific.

The actual simulator flights were conducted at AVIA Satcom´s head office, just off Don Muang airport in Bangkok on 16 May.

The fact that Gripen is built to be serviced by just a handful of soldiers in the field makes it extremely service-friendly. Together with very long MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) levels, this means easy maintenance and high availability.

Czech Republic might be the future training destination for all international Gripen fighter pilots, reports Airheadsfly.com.

As per the report, moving the Gripen Training Centre from Såtenäs in Sweden to Čáslav in Czech Republic would mean that the SwAF’s aspiring fighter pilots will have to move south after training on the Saab SK60 advanced jet trainer at Linköping. 

The report adds that outsourcing pilot training from Sweden to Czech Republic would be a logical decision as the Czech Air Force has been using the Swedish fighters for more than a decade now, and is very proud of its experience and knowledge of the Gripen system.​

"Gripen meets Brazil’s demands," says Brigadier Jose Crepaldi Affonso, FAB.

In an interview with Defesanet, Crepaldi, who was the president of the Coordinating Committee of Combat Aircraft Program (COPAC), said that the signing of the FX2 deal took place after ten months of intense contract negotiations.

About the number of single and double-seater aircraft that FAB may order in future, Crepaldi says, “The number of units required in the next two batches has yet not been decided. A two-seater Gripen can do much more than conversion training. We have had discussions with the South African Air Force (SAAF) as they also operate Gripen two-seater and use C2 function. So, having more two-seater Gripen is a possibility.

When asked if Gripen was an ideal choice for a huge nation like Brazil, Crepaldi says that they had two Brazilian teams appointed for the assessment of the competing fighters. The fighters had to start from a Brazilian Air Force Base for a specific task and then return. The aircraft completed the task without any refueling. So it is incorrect to say that the Gripen has less range. It is an entirely new aircraft with a new engine and it does not consume fuel at the rate of a twin-engine fighter.

 “Brazilian Air Force is preparing to receive Gripen NG,” Crepaldi says.

“We are well on our way to present the best fighter there is,” says Saab deputy chief executive Lennart Sindahl of the new model, which has already secured firm orders from Sweden and Brazil for a combined 96 units.

As per a report in Flightglobal, the important elements of Gripen NG like the new F414G engine, the repositioned main landing gear and the Selex ES Raven ES-05 active electronically scanned array radar, are already being tested in flight. Till date, Gripen NG test aircraft has flown 315 sorties (about 281hours). Systems like a new air data computer, wingtip-mounted radar warning receivers are being tested using Gripen C/D test assets.

“We are collecting data, so we can put it in our models for the simulators and know how the sensors perform,” says Hans Einerth, wing commander flying at Linköping. “The work we are doing now will define the human-machine interface for 2019.” 

After the success in Brazil, Saab is offering potential deals that include Gripen NG as well as Gripen C/D with enhancement options, to various countries. The report says that Saab’s existing customers like Hungary and Czech Republic have expressed an interest in increasing their Gripen fleet. A lease deal with Slovakia may happen as well, though the Slovak Government has not confirmed anything yet.

Ahlqvist believes that Gripen NG could potentially meet the future requirements of Austria, Belgium and Portugal. Last month, Saab presented information about its Gripen offer to Finland as well.
