Last week, four Swedish Air Force Gripen were at Šiauliai, Lithuania to participate in the Baltic Region Training Event 22 (BRTE22), reports the Forsvarsmakten Blog

The training event includes search and rescue missions, practice of standard interoperability and cooperation and coordination procedures. Air-to-air combat training and air-to-air refuelling were conducted on both days.

“It is an important exercise that gives us a lot of experience as we collaborate with other aircraft types with different capabilities," says Jörgen Axelsson, F17 division.

The first BRTE happened in 2008. The exercise aims at training personnel on rotational Baltic Air Policing duties and improving interoperability and takes place three times a year.

The two day training event took place on 29 and 30 September.

Have you ever wondered how great it would be if commoners could go to space? Have you ever thought if there will be a time when space shuttles and planes are the same?

According to Richard Richards, a NASA Astronaut, space shuttles and fighter aircraft are both fast. But there are more differences than similarities.

And will it be possible for Gripen to fly in space?

‘Probably not,’ says Knut Övrebö, Chief Engineer and Product Manager, Future Air System at Saab. “We should never say never. But I cannot really see a reason why it will be possible. On the other hand we have a very good benefit of services related to space or space technology. But we have a fighter aircraft designed to fly in the atmosphere. We have an air breathing engine. We have material that is not compatible. Our life support system for the pilots is not compatible either.”

Knut Övrebö however does say that Gripen is all set to meet the demands of future.

"Gripen is well prepared for the future. We have a customer who is committed till at least 2040. We need to stay operationally relevant till that time frame. There will be generations of pilots flying the same aircraft. There is a constant development of technology in order to upgrade all the time and stay at the edge of capability. I would say that Gripen is very well prepared to adopt this kind of technology. It starts at the design phase itself. While ...

As part of the MoU signed by Saab and Embraer, a group of 44 engineers and technicians will travel to Sweden on 19th October. The engineers will work on the development of the Gripen NG fighter which is being produced by Saab to equip the FAB (Brazilian Air Force). 

The agreement between Brazil and Sweden not only enlisted the purchase of Gripen aircraft but also included technology transfer which is to be carried out by Embraer.

According to Embraer, by 2020 the company will send 220 engineers to Saab’s headquarters to work on the project and familiarize themselves with the aircraft, its production and maintenance. Embraer will also be solely responsible for the production of the two-seater variant of the Gripen NG. 

The arrival of Brazilian engineers is a milestone in the development of the Gripen NG for the FAB. “This important event marks the formal start of the Brazilian Gripen NG program. Now we will work at full speed to ensure deliveries in the given period”, said Håkan Buskhe, President and CEO of Saab.

The Saab 105, Viggen, Draken, and Tunnan fighters, Saab’s classic military jets, joined the Czech Air Force Gripen in a fly by at the Ostrava’s NATO Days and Czech Air Force event. The classic jets were operated by the Swedish Air Force Historic Flight. “It was wonderful to see Gripen join the Swedish Air Force Historic Flight in Czech skies,” said Daniel Boestad, head of Gripen for Central and Eastern Europe.

Two JAS 39 Gripen of the Swedish Air Force landed at the Hosio highway in Finland on Wednesday, 23rd September. The landing was part of Baana 2015 jointly conducted by Finland and Sweden. Gripens, part of the 211th fighter division, took off from Kallax and landed successfully even though the weather conditions were not favourable. The pilots conducted a visual landing without the help of any technical aids.

Sweden and Finland have been collaborating on a variety of air exercises since the early 2000’s but this exercise was historical as it was the first time Gripen pilots landed on a highway strip. Along with the Gripens, two F-18 Hornets from the Finnish Air Force took part in the exercise.

After the landing the four aircraft underwent inspection and then took off for a joint flight session.

The Royal Thai Air Force and the Royal Thai Navy have successfully linked data systems between a surveillance-early warning aircraft equipped with Erieye radar system and Gripen fighter and HTMS Naresuan, reports ASTV Manager Online.

This is the first time that the Royal Thai Air Force and the Royal Thai Navy have worked with integrated radar signals using technology from Saab.

According to the report, the linked data systems will integrate usage of modern equipment, which will help increase the tactical capacity of both military forces to coordinate operations with improved efficiency.

As per the Royal Thai Navy, once the implementation is done, there will be an integration of radar signals from both types of radar from both military forces. This will improve target detection, information sharing and joint attacks.

The “Data link” system between surveillance-early warning aircraft Saab 340 AEW&C and Gripen and frigate HTMS Naresuan will let airborne fighting units and sea fighting units share tactical information with each other. They will now “see each other” and “see the target together” which is very useful for a successful mission, the report concludes.

The Swedish government has appointed Major General Micael Bydén as the Supreme Commander for Sverker Goranson.  

Micael Bydén started his career as a second lieutenant in the naval mine and boat service at Härnösands Coastal Artillery Regiment (KA 4, Gothenburg). But he always dreamt of flying and so started getting his training in Ljungbyhed to become a fighter pilot. He then served in Uppsala, Soderhamn, Lulea, Washington DC, Linköping and Afghanistan and was appointed as the Swedish Air Force Chief Major General in 2012.

“I accept the assignment with great respect. I look forward to working with the Armed Forces personnel and developing a military defense that meets society's demands,” says Micael Bydén.

Swedish Armed Forces appointed its first Supreme Commander in 1939 after the Second World War. The aim was to create a stronger system by appointing a manager who would take overall responsibility for all the elements of the Armed Forces.

Supreme Commander plays a vital role in making key decisions on the allocation resources to solve various tasks. Other important decisions include actions on Armed Forces Units, weapon procurement and training of new recruits.

Czech Gripen pilots reached the milestone of 20,000 Gripen flight hours this month. The pilots were honoured for this achievenment earlier this month at the 2015 NATO Days and Czech Air Force Days at Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Czech Gripen pilots' roles in missions like Iceland and Baltic States were also recognised. To mark the 20,000 Gripen flight hours and successful operational deployments within NATO, Saab’s Deputy CEO, Lennart Sindhal presented a commemorative glass plaque to the 21st Tactical Air Force Squadron. The award was accepted by Colonel Petr Hromek, commander of the 21st Air Force Base, Čáslav. 

“We are proud that Czech pilots from Čáslav Air Base have surpassed 20,000 flight hours with the Gripen. It is a pleasure for Saab to be a partner to this great show, and 2015 is particularly important because Sweden is the special partner country for NATO Days. It was wonderful to see Gripen join the Swedish Air Force Historic Flight in Czech skies,” said Daniel Boestad, head of Gripen for Central and Eastern Europe.

“Gripen is an excellent option for nations in this region, as can clearly be seen from its successful operation over many years in the Czech Republic and Hungary,” adds Boestad.​
